Alison Dunlap Junior Olympic Mountain
Bike Series
We are excited to be a part of the Alison Dunlap Junior Olympic
Mountain
Bike Series this year. Here's some information from the USA Cycling
web site:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colorado Springs, Colo. (March
4, 2008)— USA
Cycling would like to announce the 2008 Alison Dunlap Junior Olympic
Mountain
Bike Series Calendar. This year’s calendar is comprised of
35 races across 17 states, an increase of more than 20 events over
the 2007 calendar.
Entering its ninth year, the series was created by USA Cycling
to provide racing opportunities for aspiring junior mountain bike
athletes across the country. In 2003, world and national champion
off-road cyclist Alison Dunlap endorsed the program and has since
helped the series reach new levels.
As part of USA Cycling’s athlete development pipeline, the
ADJOMTB Race Series gives young riders aged 15 to 22 the opportunity
to enhance their athletic growth by earning invitations to USA
Cycling Regional Development Camps as well as the 2008 USA Cycling
Mountain Bike National Championships. In 2008, invitations to the
regional development camps will be extended to the series’ top-five
riders in the 15-16, 17-18 and 19-22 age categories. The top riders
from each regional camp will be invited to a Junior and Espoir
National Development Camp.
Most all ADJOMTB Race Series events will include age categories
for boys and girls 10-years-old and younger through the under 22
age group.
For more information on the 2010 ADJOMTB Calendar races and the view
the complete Schedule, click
here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We encourage all Junior level racers to go for this! You can still
enter the NMORS Series class you would normally enter so you'll
get your points.

Spectator Shuttle & Neutral Water Zone
This year for the cross country, we will be offering ONE spectator shuttle for
$10 to the Neutral Water Zone. This is a great place to watch the action and/or
support
your rider.
Singletrack in and out of the zone and spectacular views. The shuttle will
depart the base area promptly at 8 am. Be prepared
to hike back 2 miles (all
downhill)
to the base area.
By reservation only (12 max.), so sign-up
early! Call 575-776-3233 to RSVP or show up at the Registration area.
Spectators can purchase a $5 access permit and hike up on the mountain. Allow
at least an hour before the start so you'll be able to see the action
on the course. If you can reach the property gate no later than 8:15
am, you can hike up the course. If not, you will need to hike up
the Bull Of The Woods Trail from the trailhead at the parking area.
The
course is too narrow in the first mile to allow hikers
and racers at the same time. Spectators will be able to view the
course when it's anywhere in the village.
The Neutral Water Zone will be on Roger's
Trail after Redi's Run. Small bike bottles of water will be handed
out
if you
need one. Please retreave your bottle at the registration area after
the race.

Course
Pre-Riding
The cross country and hill climb course is open for
pre-riding dawn till dusk everyday.
You must purchase an access permit BEFORE
riding.
This
is
an open
MTB riding & hiking
area, so
look out
for two-way traffic at all times. On Friday July 22nd, racers
will get a special access permit price of $5. Permits will be
sold at registration. More information about our Northside MTB
area here.
Everyone
must be off the course by 6:00 pm.

Kids
Races
For kids 10 and under who are not entered in any other class. The races will
stay in the base area. Free entry and
prizes. Kid's 6 and under will race one loop accompanied
by an adult. 7 to 10 year olds will race two loops.

Awards
Saturday's and Sunday's awards
will be on Rhoda's Deck. Food and drinks and
FREE Santa Fe Brewing Co. brews will be available. 10% discount
to anyone with a chairlift ticket or a Taos Ski Pass Card.
Cash prizes to Pro men and women. Beautiful Taos area
original art awards for overall fastest time posted by
men and women in the
hill climb
and on the cross country long course. Other awards will be special
Frazer Fred medals and tons of drawing items consisting of Taos lift
tickets, merchandise, gift certificates,
lodging, and food.
Alison Dunlap Junior Olympic MTB Series awards will
be special medals.

Course Descriptions
The cross country and hill climb course is open for
pre-riding dawn till dusk everyday.
You must purchase an access permit BEFORE
riding.
This
is
an open
riding area,
so
look out
for two-way traffic at all times. On Friday July 22nd, racers
will get a special access permit price of $5. Permits will be sold
at registration. More information about our Northside MTB area here.
Those of you who might be concerned about course conditions if it's wet...well
don't worry, we have a rocky soil instead of clay so it doesn't get
gooey
or slimy and is actually excellent riding when wet.
On
race days, the area will be closed during the competition, and
there will be
no spectator
riding allowed until after the competition.
Cross Country
All Categories will start in the base area of Taos Ski Valley.
The XC course winds up to Twining Road and NEW for this year, will
take a left on Phoenix Switchback bypassing the super steep Chipmunk
Lane (which we think no one will miss). Phoenix Switchback turns
into Bull Of The Woods Road and up past the property gate. The
climb
levels
off a bit here for about a 1/4 mile to the Northside hut and kiosk,
then more climbing, then a breather, then up to the two loose
and rocky "Mothers.”
Your reward after the "Mothers" is a FLAT beautiful meadow. The climbing starts in again (only not quite as
loose or steep) up the singletrack Sawmill Trail. At the top
of Sawmill,
take heart in knowing the majority of the steepest climbs are
over. Now you'll get a bit of a downhill break on the
singletrack Steam Engine Trail before some more climbing, only
not nearly as steep as what you've just been up. Staying on
singletrack, you will then get on Redi's Run which climbs, but
it's not steep
and with some level and bits of downhill. That pops out on the
nice and gentle Roger's Trail where the Neutral Water Zone will
be. NEW this year is the extention of Roger's Trail which is
a gentle climb that turns into Jumpin' Jack Flash for a little
gravity kick over some old mining mounds. Jumpin' Jack will intersect
again with Roger's Trail which winds around a bench (meaning FLAT) area on the mountain
and some beautiful views. This new trail will add .25 miles, but
the elevation gain will be the same as in previous years...and
is more fun to ride. Now you'll be back out on the smooth Bull
Of The Woods Trail for a gradual climb up the Crossover
Trail. Crossover undulates across the mountain to the Overlook
Trail. At the intersection of Crossover
and Deer Trail, you are at the high point of the Category
3 course. Overlook Trail is a fun and fast singletrack which
takes
you
to the two-track Frazer Mountain Road. All downhill to the short
winding Dark Trail, and back out on Frazer Mtn. Road to big ring
it out to the course split.
Category 3 riders will head down Gold Camp Trail, coming to a short but very
steep stretch of loose, rocky trail that is marked with the 3 arrow
down “danger" signs. It's super steep with loose rocks and a 90 degree turn at the bottom.
It's not a pretty picture if you go off...and I'm NOT exaggerating
here.
This should be ridden VERY slowly or WALKED (a smart choice). Afterwards,
a
fun
and fast
descent
down Bull Of The Woods Road and back through the property gate
and down Phoenix Switchback. Here's where you'll want to go as
fast as you can, because when it turns up Twining Road, a
good
run at it will mean less pedaling on Twining to where you will
be crossing the bridge to the Rubazahl return trail ski run. Down
Rubazahl to the start/finish line and a well-deserved lunch and
FREE Santa FE Brewing Co. beer.
At the course split, Category
1
and 2
riders will do Sawmill, Steam Engine, Redi's Run, thru the Neutral
Water Zone, Roger's Trail, Bull Of The Woods Trail, to Malachite
Trail. Malachite is an old two-track that runs around the back
side of Bull Of The Woods Mountain. Yep, it is more climbing,
but there is one break. The back side of BOTW Mtn. offers
another awesome view. A fast descent down BOTW Trail to
the Crossover
Trail. At the high point on Crossover, you will hang a left on
the singletrack Deer Trail. Some mild climbing for a ways, then
it's all downhill to the upper Drainage Trail and a sharp left
on the Overlook Trail again. Following the same course as lap 1
to
the
course split.
Category 2 riders will do the same course back to the village and the start/finish
as is outlined above in the Cat. 3 description.
Category 1 will do it all over again, but instead of the Overlook Trail, you
will continue to follow the Drainage Trail down to Dark Trail and
back down
Frazer Mtn. Road to the course split and back to the village and
finish for the fine and FREE libations.
Yeah, we know there is a lot of climbing here, but we hope everyone can enjoy
the "breathtaking" scenery, the beautiful alpine views, the wildflowers,
and the clean, cool air.
Category 1 - 21.4 miles
Category 2 - 15.9 miles
Category 3 - 9.9 miles

Hill Climb
The "World Renowned" Hill
Climb starts in the base area of Taos Ski Valley and climbs 2,800
ft. in 5.5 miles to the top of 12,163 ft. Frazer Mountain. The
course is entirely on village dirt roads, two-track "jeep" roads, and old grassed-over roads. The average grade is less than 10%, with
the steepest at nearly 23%. Go for it and beat the new world record
set in 2008 by Michael McCalla and 2009 by Nina Baum. The reward
is kickin' back at the top to some of the most beautiful views
in
all of New
Mexico. Water, energy bars and drinks will be available at the
finish. When the bench racing is over, the ride back to the village
is
worth the race up. One can either ride back down Frazer Mountain
Road or hit the singletrack down Wheeler Peak Trail to Bull Of
The Woods Trail, Bull Of The Woods Road, and into the village.
All Categories start in the base area of Taos Ski Valley. The XC course winds
up to Twining Road, left on Coyote Lane, and up the
infamous Chipmunk Lane, where the real fun begins. After
Chipmunk, you'll catch your breath on Phoenix Switchback, which
turns into Bull
Of
The Woods
Road
and up past the property gate. The
climb
levels
off a bit here for about a 1/4 mile to the Northside hut and kiosk,
then more climbing, then a breather, then up to the two loose
and rocky "Mothers.” Your reward after the "Mothers" is a FLAT beautiful meadow. The heart rate gets a chance to drop a little before
more climbing (only not as steep) to the start of Frazer Mountain
Road. Not a bad climb on Frazer till you get to "Big Daddy". Yeah,
it's steep, it's 23%, but it's not too long. Walk or ride. After
"Big Daddy" there is actually a little bit of downhill and a nice
long gentle climb for awhile. Up again to some nice high meadows
for a break and then climb again up the "S Curves". At the junction
of Bighorn Trail and Frazer Mtn. Trail, the road mellows out for
a nice long gentle climb to the Top Of The World. From Top Of The
World to the top is the roughest part of the road. After a steeper
climb up from Top Of The World, the road levels out to a gentle
treeless climb with incredible views. Up again through the last
treed section and back out for the final stretch to the finish.
At the top, relax and enjoy the incredible views and refuel with some complementary water and energy
bars before the super fun ALL downhill ride back to
the village. Lunch on Rhoda's Deck (1/2 lb.burgers, huge sandwiches
w/ fries or onion rings) and FREE Santa Fe Brewing Co. beer. Nobody
needs to be counting calories after this!

The kids races will stay entirely in the base area. Kids 6 and

schwag, a free t-shirt, AND lunch each day. The best part is wearing
the obnoxious orange vest and if you're super lucky, you'll get
to
play with a radio.

for more info.
Rhoda's and Rhoda's Deck will be offering a 10% discount to anyone with a chairlift
